May 18, 2006 (Philadelphia) Netting over $45,000, the 26th annual UCP 5K Corporate Run/Walk has been declared a winner. Over 1,000 participants representing more than 40 area businesses came out to support United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Philadelphia & Vicinity, an organization that provides programs and family support services for people living with disabilities. The money raised will enable UCP to help more people living with disabilities achieve greater independence and inclusion in their communities.
Before the event’s official start, Thomas Snyder, VP of the Property Team for United States Liability Insurance Group presented a check to Stephen Sheridan, UCP’s Chief Executive Officer, in the amount of for $41,125 representing the total amount netted this year. For the past six years, United States Liability Insurance Group has been the event’s largest supporter.
CBS 3’s Sports Anchor, Steve Bucci served as the event’s first Celebrity Grand Marshal. In his role, he officially started the race and congratulated participants during an awards ceremony. Donning race number 1000, Bucci also participated in the run.
The UCP 5K Corporate Run/Walk offered competitive and non-competitive levels of participation for teams made up of three or more participants employed by the same company, attending the same school, or who are members of the same club or organization. With the starting line in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, participants ran or walked the course along MLK (formerly West River) Drive. Athletes of all abilities were welcome to participate.
Among the industries represented by the registered teams were insurance, finance, law, healthcare, technology and small business. According to Willa Kravitz, “This race is meant to promote friendly competition within and among various industries with a winning end result for all—raising important funds to benefit individuals living with disabilities. I think we have achieved our goals.”
United Cerebral Palsy of Philadelphia & Vicinity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to positively affecting the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities, including cerebral palsy, mental retardation, head trauma, spinal cord injuries, or any disability that severely limits an individual's independent functioning. Located in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia, UCP offers clients and their families a variety of social, vocational, residential, recreational, therapeutic, educational and support services.
